Rachel Marsh, the actress playing dental assistant Carly in FX comedy series Adults, has discussed the creation of "Hiccup", a pop song that became a summer anthem in the show's second season. The track appeared in the episode "Pop Girlie" and marked an unexpected foray into pop stardom for her character, making it a notable moment in the series now available on Hulu.

Marsh explained to A*Pop that she and director Paul Briganti experimented extensively with different performance approaches, balancing conflicting tones: treating it as Carly's earnest attempt whilst playing up her lack of talent for comedic effect. In the episode's plot, Carly releases the "rusty but catchy" single whilst awaiting dental school exam results, with reluctant support from her boyfriend Samir (played by Malik Elassal), as part of her dream to become a pop star.
