Alan Wake 2 sales surpass 3 million copies

Developed over time first seen 2 months ago

Eurogamer ·

Remedy Entertainment has confirmed that Alan Wake 2 has now sold more than 3 million copies, marking a turnaround for a game that started slowly at launch and took years to become profitable. The figure was revealed in the developer-publisher's half-year financial report covering January to June, with the milestone reached during the second quarter, following an earlier update in early 2025 that saw the title pass 2 million sales and turn a profit for the first time.

Despite this, Remedy's overall financial results showed falls in revenue, profit and cashflow, which the company put down to heavy spending on developing and marketing its next release, Control Resonant, alongside continued funding of the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes and an unannounced third project. Control Resonant, due out on 24th September for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, is now Remedy's main focus, and anticipation for it has also driven stronger sales of the original Control game. Remedy's CEO, who took over in February, has said he believes both Alan Wake and Control "should have sold more" and that the studio has yet to reach its full commercial potential.

Remedy Entertainment is the Finnish studio behind Alan Wake 2, a horror shooter that launched in 2023 to strong reviews but weak initial sales, taking a long time to earn back its development costs. The company both develops and publishes its own games, meaning its financial fortunes are closely tied to how well titles like this perform over the long term rather than just at launch.

Remedy is also known for the Control series and is currently working on several other projects, including remakes of the classic Max Payne games and an unannounced new title. A sequel-expansion called Control Resonant is due out in September, and the studio has a new chief executive who took over earlier this year, both of which are relevant to how Remedy's business is currently being run and reported.

Twice yearly, Remedy publishes financial results covering its sales, revenue and costs, which is how figures such as total copies sold typically come to light. These reports matter because they show whether individual games are actually profitable once development and marketing costs are taken into account, not just how they were received critically.
