Studio executives and ratings authorities demanded cuts to achieve a family-friendly rating, fundamentally altering the film's focus from scares to character relationships.

In discussing the revision, Carter explained how repeated rounds of cuts compromised his initial creative vision, though his new edition paradoxically runs shorter than the theatrical version rather than simply restoring deleted scenes.
