Airbnb bans hosts from demanding time-consuming checkout chores

The Guardian ·

Airbnb will bar hosts from asking guests to do chores requiring significant effort or time, such as stripping beds, washing dishes or taking rubbish offsite. The global rules take effect on 20 November and respond to complaints from guests who have faced cleaning fees as well as checkout chore lists.

Cleaning fees have not been shown separately since April 2025; hosts may include cleaning costs in the total price. Under the updated policy, seven standard house rules must be displayed in full when guests book, covering matters such as check-in times, smoking and pets. Hosts may still make reasonable requests based on local circumstances, and can ask guests to leave used dishes in the sink.
