Alamo Drafthouse Austin Theater To Be Renamed Matthew McConaughey Cinema

Deadline · 4 hours ago

The Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's Mueller location in Austin, Texas, is being renamed the Matthew McConaughey Cinema from next week, honouring the Oscar-winning actor's ties to the city and the film industry. An official ceremony will take place on 10 August, following a screening of McConaughey's new film The Rivals of Amziah King, when a commemorative plaque will be unveiled at the venue.

McConaughey joins a select group of filmmakers and performers previously honoured with named Alamo Drafthouse theatres, including Christopher Nolan, Pam Grier, Spike Lee, John Hughes and Ivan Reitman, with Bong Joon Ho the first recipient in 2019. The Austin-raised, University of Texas-educated actor will introduce the screening, followed by a Q&A with the film's director and star, and a live musical performance by cast members. Alamo Drafthouse's chief executive and Austin's mayor both praised McConaughey's contribution to the city's cultural identity in marking the occasion.
