Philadelphia-based Mallory Hawk has released her first solo album, Chinook, after establishing herself through performances with bands including Customer and Trace Mountains and as a co-founder of the Double Double Whammy independent record label. The album's title references military helicopters from Hawk's childhood in the military community of Fayetteville, North Carolina—aircraft her father described as uniquely capable of colliding with themselves. This image serves as the project's central metaphor, reflecting Hawk's patterns of prioritising others' needs at personal cost, a theme that anchors the album's emotional narrative across its 10 songs.

Chinook deliberately shifts between musical styles including indie rock, dance-punk, acoustic songwriting, indie-folk, garage punk, new wave, and country rock, with each track presented with careful arrangements by producer Samuel Acchione alongside musicians including synth player Logan Roth and hornist Tree Palmedo. Rather than appearing disjointed, the genre-hopping approach maintains listener engagement whilst serving each song's emotional purpose. The album's refusal to align with contemporary streaming preferences—which typically favour consistent, algorithm-friendly sounds—appears deliberate, and industry commentary suggests this stylistic independence may explain Hawk's decision to self-release rather than seek traditional label backing.
