Alien Sex Fiend: The 40-year journey of a goth-rock original

Far Out ·

Alien Sex Fiend’s 40-year career is presented as a story of an uncompromising goth-rock act that turned theatrical horror imagery, punk energy and electronic experimentation into a durable cult following. Formed by Nik Fiend and Christine “Mrs Fiend” Wade in London’s Batcave scene, the band was often dismissed by critics as superficial or trend-driven, yet its refusal to fit neatly within genre expectations became central to its identity and longevity.

The group’s 1983 debut, *Who’s Sleeping In My Brain*, helped establish it in the expanding goth scene, while its first five albums performed strongly on the UK indie charts and its deliberately chaotic live shows attracted committed fans. Although Alien Sex Fiend never became mainstream and its sixth album, 1988’s *Another Planet*, missed the indie charts, the band found substantial support in Japan and continued to evolve through industrial, hip-hop and psychobilly influences. After recording into the 2000s and a near-decade hiatus, it released its 13th studio album, *Possessed*, in 2018; Nik Fiend still describes himself chiefly as a fan happy to participate in music.

  • Alien Sex Fiend built a lasting cult career from goth theatrics and experimentation.
  • Critics dismissed the band, but devoted audiences sustained it.
  • The Fiends remain active after more than four decades.
