Alienware 34 QD-OLED review: An ultrawide showcase for Samsung’s latest display tech

Engadget · 2 hours ago

Engadget's Devindra Hardawar has reviewed Alienware's new 34-inch ultrawide QD-OLED gaming monitor (model AW3426DW), awarding it 8.5 out of 10. The headline draw is that it is among the first displays to use Samsung's latest 5-layer RGB Stripe panel, which arranges red, green and blue subpixels to deliver crisper text and brighter colours. This finally addresses the green text fringing that troubled earlier QD-OLED screens, making it a notable step forward for the technology.

The monitor offers a 21:9 aspect ratio at 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, a 280Hz refresh rate (up from 240Hz), standard brightness of 300 nits and peak brightness of 1,300 nits, plus an anti-reflective coating and DisplayHDR True Black 500 support. It costs $800, the same as the previous model, though the design is simpler and the stand offers only height adjustment and tilt. Ports include DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1, USB-C and USB-A, but no direct USB-C video or Thunderbolt. The reviewer found the screen looked spectacular in games such as Marathon and Overwatch 2, but noted its relatively short height felt cramped next to taller 16:9 alternatives like Alienware's own 32-inch 4K model.

  • Alienware's 34-inch QD-OLED scores 8.5/10 with Samsung's new RGB Stripe panel.
  • Brighter screen, 280Hz refresh and finally no text fringing, for $800.
  • Downsides: pricey versus rivals and a somewhat cramped screen height.
