Meta has begun rolling out the ability for all Threads users worldwide to send direct messages to Meta AI, expanding a feature it first tested publicly on Threads' main feed in May 2026. The company says the change responds to user feedback requesting more private, contextual interactions with the AI without needing to share conversations publicly, bringing Threads into line with similar DM features already available on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Within DMs, users can share Threads posts, images, links or videos with Meta AI, ask follow-up questions and explore topics in more depth one-on-one. Meta AI's presence in the public Threads feed remains a limited test confined to five countries — Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Singapore — where users can view and tag its posts using @meta.ai, and can mark themselves "not interested" or mute its replies, though they still cannot block the account outright.
