Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon identifies herself as alleged victim in Mick Mundine case

Daily Mail ·

Sydney councillor Yvonne Weldon has publicly identified herself as the alleged victim in a child sexual assault case against prominent Indigenous elder Mick Mundine. The 79-year-old was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault, including assault of a child, over an alleged incident from more than 40 years ago. Ms Weldon, the first Aboriginal woman elected to the City of Sydney Council, came forward to encourage other survivors to speak up and to break what she described as "a culture of silence that allows abuse to continue".

NSW Police established Strike Force Millersburg in December 2025 to investigate alleged historical sexual assaults on a then 15-year-old girl in Redfern in June 1986. Mundine, arrested in Redfern on Thursday, is chief executive of the Aboriginal Housing Company, an organisation established in 1973 to secure housing for Aboriginal families and acquire properties in the area known as The Block. He has been granted bail and is due to appear at Downing Centre Local Court next week, with his lawyer stating he would fight the charges.
