Explained simply
The New York City Marathon is a major annual road race that takes runners through all five boroughs of the city. The men’s and women’s races are run separately, with competitors covering the same marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres.
Andreas Almgren is a Swedish distance runner who has competed on the track and over shorter road distances. His European half-marathon record and 10,000-metre gold came in the same year as his move into marathon racing. The result matters in part because no European-born man had won the New York race for three decades.
