Amazon’s redesigned Echo Show 16 adds an optional glare-resistant screen

Engadget ·

Amazon has redesigned the Echo Show 16 with a glare-reducing nanomatte screen option, a larger display and a slimmer body. The update matters for people using a smart display in bright rooms, while changes to its cameras, sound and Alexa features aim to make it more useful for entertainment and household tasks.

The 16-inch Full HD screen offers 10 per cent more viewing area than the Echo Show 15, and the device is nearly 40 per cent thinner. Amazon says it has 20 per cent more computing power, eight micro woofers and two tweeters; its 13-megapixel wide-angle camera supports Visual ID recognition from up to 17 feet, compared with eight feet before. It includes Fire TV and new interactive Alexa+ features, which require Prime or an Alexa+ subscription. Pre-orders are open at $500 for the standard screen or $570 for nanomatte, with $100 off; shipping is due later this year.

In short

  • Echo Show 16 adds a glare-reducing nanomatte option.
  • The 16-inch screen has 10 per cent more viewing area.
  • Prices start at $500, with $100 off for pre-orders.

Explained simply

The Echo Show is Amazon’s range of smart displays: touchscreen devices with Alexa, the company’s voice assistant, built in. People use them to watch videos, check information, control connected home devices and make video calls.

The Echo Show 16 is the larger model in the range, designed for rooms where people may want to view a screen from across the space. Amazon has added an optional nanomatte finish intended to reduce glare, alongside changes to the display, camera and speakers.

The redesign matters to people weighing up a smart display for a bright room or for shared household use. Some of its Alexa+ features require a Prime membership or a separate Alexa+ subscription.
