Amazon Prime Video, Rogers Communications Reach 12-Year Deal For Exclusive NHL Broadcasts

Deadline · 3 hours ago

Amazon Prime Video has secured exclusive rights to broadcast 26 regular-season National Hockey League games on Wednesday nights in Canada under a new 12-year agreement with Rogers Communications, beginning September 2026, with coverage available in English and French plus select playoff games. Rogers, which operates Sportsnet, maintains its own broader NHL rights package valued at $11 billion through 2037-38, with financial terms of the Amazon arrangement undisclosed.

The deal marks the end of Hockey Night in Canada's status as a publicly accessible broadcast following nearly three-quarters of a century of free over-the-air transmission. Rogers and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation declined to renew their sublicensing partnership, whilst Rogers-owned Citytv also withdrew from national game coverage. This transition exemplifies a widening global shift in which streaming services progressively consolidate premium sports content, removing it from traditional free and cable broadcasts in favour of subscription-based viewing.
