Kindle Plus adds thousands of audiobooks to Amazon’s US subscription

The Verge ·

Amazon has renamed Kindle Unlimited to Kindle Plus and is adding thousands of audiobooks to its US subscription catalogue at no extra cost. The change broadens the ways subscribers can access selected books, while keeping the service separate from Prime.

The $11.99 monthly plan still offers selected ebooks, comics and magazines, with up to 20 titles borrowed at a time and no return dates. Some books have companion audiobooks; new additions include AI-narrated “virtual voice” editions, and eligible audiobooks made through Audible’s ACX marketplace. Authors can make titles available through Kindle Direct Publishing, and Amazon says it plans to bring the audiobook expansion to more markets over time.

In short

  • Kindle Unlimited is now called Kindle Plus.
  • Thousands of US audiobooks are included at no extra cost.
  • The subscription remains $11.99 a month and separate from Prime.

Explained simply

Amazon’s Kindle subscription service, previously called Kindle Unlimited, gives members access to a selection of digital books for a monthly fee. It is separate from Prime, Amazon’s broader membership programme, and subscribers can borrow up to 20 titles at a time.

The catalogue includes ebooks, comics and magazines, and some books are also available as audiobooks. Amazon’s publishing services let authors offer digital books and, in some cases, audiobook editions to readers through its platforms.

Adding audiobooks gives subscribers another way to access selected titles, including editions narrated by people or generated using computer voices. The service matters to authors too, because making a title available can connect it with Kindle readers and audiobook listeners.
