Amazon’s Alexa Home Map adds 3D device controls and camera activity

The Verge ·

Amazon is redesigning Alexa Home Map as an interactive 3D view of connected devices inside a home and activity around it. The update expands the 2D map introduced in 2023, bringing device controls and live camera information into one view.

The exterior view can show movement detected by compatible Ring cameras and offers a timeline to review the previous 24 hours across cameras. To create the map, users must scan each room with an iPhone equipped with LiDAR or structured-light sensors; Amazon says an average home takes 15 to 20 minutes. The preview is due to roll out later this year, with support planned for Alexa and Ring apps and selected Amazon screens and TVs.

In short

  • Alexa Home Map is being rebuilt as an interactive 3D model.
  • Ring cameras can show nearby movement and a 24-hour timeline.
  • Scanning takes about 15 to 20 minutes on a compatible iPhone.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

An interactive 3D map could make smart-home devices easier to find and control, while bringing camera activity into a single view may help residents understand what is happening around their home. A 24-hour timeline could also make it simpler to review events, and a room scan that takes around 15 to 20 minutes may be a reasonable setup cost for those who value these features.

The case against

Putting device controls and camera activity in one detailed map may raise concerns about how much information a company collects about a home and its occupants, and how securely that information is stored and accessed. The required scan also adds effort and depends on a compatible iPhone, which may exclude some households; some users may prefer simpler controls without a persistent spatial view of their home.

Explained simply

Alexa Home Map is part of Amazon’s smart-home system, which lets people manage connected devices such as lights, locks and cameras through Alexa. Amazon introduced a two-dimensional home map in 2023 to help users see and control those devices by room.

Amazon also owns Ring, which makes home security cameras and doorbells. Linking room-based device controls with camera information brings together two parts of its home-monitoring services, while the map’s room scan depends on an iPhone with sensors that can measure space in three dimensions.
