AMD has agreed to invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a new AI infrastructure partnership, announced on Wednesday. Under the deal, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI GPUs via the chipmaker's new Helios rack-scale system, adding to a growing roster of computing agreements the AI firm has struck to support Claude's training and operation.

The first gigawatt of capacity is due to go live in the first half of 2027, building on Anthropic's recent data centre deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf, alongside existing infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom and Amazon; a further deal with Meta has also been rumoured. Separately, the two companies will launch a multi-year engineering collaboration in which AMD will use Claude across its software development, engineering and product work. Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer Tom Brown said the partnership secures capacity while optimising it for training and serving Claude.
