AMD has unveiled Helios, a rack-scale AI system intended for the largest data centres and AI laboratories, positioning it as a direct challenger to Nvidia’s dominant infrastructure products. The launch matters because demand for systems that train and run frontier AI models is accelerating, and AMD is seeking to turn high-profile customer commitments into a stronger share of this lucrative market.

Helios combines many processors into a single high-powered unit and is due to ship later this year, with customers including OpenAI, Meta, Oracle, Anthropic and Microsoft planning deployments. Microsoft will expand Azure with Helios, while Anthropic and AMD have agreed to deploy up to two gigawatts of GPUs; AMD also announced its Venice-X data-centre CPU for 2027 and forecasts a $1.4 trillion AI accelerator market by 2030.
