American Airlines is bringing Starlink Wi-Fi to its entire mainline fleet in 2027
American Airlines has announced it will equip its entire mainline fleet of more than 1,030 aircraft with Starlink Wi-Fi beginning in 2027, more than doubling its earlier commitment of 500 aircraft. This expansion significantly broadens access to fast satellite internet for the airline's over 165 million annual passengers.
The rollout will provide speeds of up to 1Gbps through Starlink's Performance Aero Terminal, substantially improving on previous systems. The deal represents a strategic shift from American's earlier AT&T agreement and positions SpaceX as the leader in commercial aviation's satellite Wi-Fi race, with United Airlines already operating Starlink on 724 aircraft and Starlink partnering with 48 airlines globally.

American Airlines has announced it will fit Starlink internet to all its main aircraft by 2027. Starlink is SpaceX's satellite internet service, which differs from the traditional systems airlines have previously used. The move will provide passengers with significantly faster in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity.
Faster in-flight internet allows passengers to stream videos and work effectively during flights, making it an important factor in airline competition. American Airlines previously had a smaller rollout planned but is now expanding to its entire fleet, reflecting growing confidence in the technology.
Other major airlines including United have already equipped aircraft with Starlink, and dozens more are adopting it globally. The shift shows how satellite internet is becoming aviation's preferred solution for passenger connectivity, with SpaceX at the centre of this transformation.
