US Supreme Court declines Afghan family’s bid to overturn adoption of girl

Daily Mail ·

The US Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear an appeal by an Afghan couple seeking to overturn the adoption of a girl they had raised, confirming she will remain with the American couple who adopted her. The case centres on conflicting accounts of how the child came into the Masts’ care and the legal effort to reunite her with her biological relatives.

The girl, now seven, was two months old when her parents were killed in a US military operation in Afghanistan in September 2019; she was found injured in the rubble. After a Virginia judge granted Joshua and Stephanie Mast custody, she was placed with an Afghan uncle and later raised by his son and daughter-in-law for about 18 months. The Afghan couple say the girl was taken from them after they reached the US in 2021; Virginia’s highest court upheld the adoption, citing a six-month deadline for challenging it.

  • The Supreme Court left the adoption in place.
  • The Afghan relatives’ appeal was declined.
  • The girl is now seven and will stay with the Masts.
