A privately owned island in the Venice lagoon, complete with a Napoleonic-era fort converted into a villa, has been put up for sale. Crevan, described by estate agents as an "enchanting oasis of peace and beauty", offers views of Venice's main island while remaining removed from the crowds that throng the city, making it an unusual and highly exclusive property listing in a region better known for tourist congestion than tranquil private retreats.

Slightly smaller than a football pitch, Crevan lies a short boat ride from Burano and Torcello and was built in 1806 by French forces to defend the lagoon before passing to Austrian, then Italian, control. Its fort has been converted into a four-bedroom villa with manicured gardens, a private mooring and a helipad, and is listed by agencies including Lionard Luxury Real Estate and Christie's affiliate Dimora Italian Real Estate, though the asking price is undisclosed. It joins other lagoon islands recently on the market, including the €24m Isola Santa Cristina, once owned by a Swarovski heir.
