‘an open field’ Is a Deeply Personal Story of Loss, Grief and Compassion (Exclusive Netflix Trailer)
Teboho Edkins has made a 38-minute documentary about grieving his brother Max, who died in the 2019 Ethiopian Boeing 737 MAX crash. The film, *an open field*, will reach a global audience on Netflix from 1 December, bringing attention to both a family’s loss and the compassion shown by people near the crash site.
The crash killed all 157 people on board, six minutes after the plane took off from Addis Ababa. Villagers gathered to help and some kept vigil at the site for a month; years later, they continue to mourn with visiting relatives. The film premiered at IDFA in 2025, winning best short documentary, and features English and Amharic dialogue.
