Anderson could be given chance to join Surrey
James Anderson could continue his cricket career with Surrey after Lancashire decided not to offer him a new contract. The England great, who has not announced his retirement, would bring experience to Surrey and could take on a managed workload while pursuing a County Championship title.
Anderson, who turns 45 in July 2027, has taken 704 wickets in 188 Tests and 911 across international cricket. He also claimed 443 first-class wickets for Lancashire, including 50 Championship wickets last season at an average of 17; several counties have reportedly expressed interest in speaking to him.
In short
- Surrey could offer Anderson a way to continue playing.
- Lancashire did not renew his contract after 25 years.
- He took 50 Championship wickets last season at an average of 17.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Surrey could reasonably see Anderson as a valuable signing: his record and recent Championship form suggest he can still take wickets, while his experience could strengthen the squad and help younger bowlers. A managed workload might let the club benefit from his quality while limiting the demands on a player nearing 45, and give him a chance to pursue a County Championship title.
The case against
Surrey could also reasonably decide that signing Anderson carries more uncertainty than value. His age and the physical demands of a full county season make it difficult to know how available he would be, even with a managed workload; the club may prefer to invest its resources in bowlers who can contribute over a longer period. Lancashire’s decision not to renew also gives Surrey reason to weigh his recent record against the costs and squad space a signing would require.
