Anderson stops short of retiring after Lancashire exit

BBC Sport ·

James Anderson says he is sad to have been released by Lancashire, but has not announced his retirement and may continue playing elsewhere. The decision ends his 25-year association with the county, despite his wish to play through the summer of 2027.

Lancashire said it is rebuilding its squad after finishing second-bottom in Division Two, with the aim of challenging for the Division One title within three or four years. Anderson took 50 Championship wickets last season and was named the club’s player of the year; several counties are interested, though a move would depend on the deal, his role and travel from his home in Cheshire.

In short

  • Anderson has not confirmed his retirement.
  • Lancashire will not renew his contract for 2027.
  • Several counties are interested in signing him.
