Elliot Anderson has completed a club-record £116m move from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City after becoming a key figure for England at the World Cup. The transfer underlines his rapid rise from a highly regarded Tyneside schoolboy to one of English football’s most valuable players, while highlighting Newcastle United’s regret at having to sell him in 2024.

Newcastle sold the 23-year-old midfielder to Forest for £35m because of concerns about breaching profit and sustainability rules and facing a points deduction; manager Eddie Howe later described it as his most reluctant sale. Anderson developed at Valley Gardens Middle School, Wallsend Boys’ Club and Newcastle’s academy, and had also been eligible for Scotland through his grandmother before committing to England after withdrawing from a Scotland call-up through injury.
