Eight abandoned Grimsby kittens find homes as charity reports rise in rescues

Daily Mail ·

Eight kittens, found in a rubbish bag on a Grimsby street when they were about eight weeks old, have been rehomed after being taken in by Blue Cross. Their rescue highlights a rise in unwanted and abandoned kittens, with the charity reporting a 15 per cent increase compared with last year.

After routine health checks, the black-and-white litter was transferred to a Blue Cross rehoming centre in Oxfordshire, where all eight found homes. They were named Guinness, Peroni, Moretti, Miguel, Madri, Stella, Cruzcampo and Bud. The centre manager suggested financial pressures may lead owners to skip neutering, while breeding without enough demand may also leave kittens without homes.

  • Blue Cross reports a 15 per cent rise in unwanted kittens.
  • Cost pressures and lack of demand may contribute to abandonment.

Abandoned and unwanted kittens are a growing concern for animal rescue charities across the UK. Blue Cross, one of the country's largest animal welfare organisations, has seen a significant increase in the number of kittens it rescues and rehomes, with numbers up 15 per cent on the previous year.

When cats are abandoned or surrendered because owners cannot care for them, charities like Blue Cross provide medical treatment and try to find them permanent homes. The rise in rescue numbers indicates the issue is becoming more widespread and suggests growing difficulties for cat owners.

Financial hardship is thought to play a role, as neutering services can be costly and some owners may not access them, leading to unwanted litters. Breeders who produce more kittens than there is demand for may also contribute to the problem of surplus animals needing rescue.
