Anne Hathaway “Pushed Really Hard” Trying to Get Julie Andrews to Return for ‘Princess Diaries 3’
Anne Hathaway has revealed that she made a strong effort to persuade Julie Andrews to reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the upcoming Princess Diaries 3, after Andrews indicated she did not think she should return. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight following her Disney Legends Honor at the D23 Expo, Hathaway said she and the production "pushed really hard" to bring Andrews back but stressed the team would respect her wishes if she remained unwilling to return to the franchise.
Andrews had earlier told The Hollywood Reporter that she feels "past" that stage of her career and now focuses on writing, podcasts and voiceover work rather than film roles. Details of Princess Diaries 3 remain largely under wraps, though it will continue the story of Mia Thermopolis, who became queen of Genovia at the end of the second film. Adele Lim is set to direct from a script by Flora Greeson, with Hathaway saying she wants the film to honour long-time fans, many of whom watched the original 2001 film as children and are now parents themselves.
