Annie Leibovitz Sues Observer Over Justin and Hailey Bieber Photo: ‘Exploitation’

Rolling Stone · 1 day ago

Annie Leibovitz has taken legal action against Observer Media, which operates Observer.com, over the unauthorized use of one of her photographs. The disputed image, captured in 2019, shows newlyweds Justin and Hailey Bieber in coordinated Dolce & Gabbana outfits and was published alongside a 2020 article on the website without the photographer's consent.

When Leibovitz's licensing agency notified Observer Media in May 2024 that the image infringed on her copyright and demanded its removal, the company did not comply. The photograph remained live on the site months later, prompting Leibovitz to file suit in Manhattan federal court, where she claims the infringement was deliberate and malicious, seeking damages of up to $150,000.
