Ubisoft has greenlit a new instalment in the Far Cry franchise, currently in development at its Vantage Studios subsidiary, while cancelling a separate Far Cry title that had reportedly been in the works as an extraction shooter. The move, first reported by Insider Gaming, comes as Ubisoft has yet to formally announce Far Cry 7, suggesting the publisher is reshaping its plans for the long-running series even as fans wait for a new mainline entry.

The newly advanced project, codenamed Kodiak, is described as a "really ambitious" open-world first-person shooter that returns to the franchise's traditional format of player-driven stories and interactions, and remains several years from release. The cancelled title, codenamed Maverick, will have its foundations repurposed for Kodiak, though without pursuing the extraction shooter genre. Separately, Ubisoft's next mainline Far Cry game, known only as Blackbird and widely expected to be Far Cry 7, remains in development; the series has not seen a mainline release since 2021, though a TV adaptation is also in the pipeline.
