Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's special projects lead and former chief operating officer, has announced his departure after eight years at the company, saying he plans to pursue "something new." In an internal memo shared on X, he said he had been considering "the next horizon" for the company and was leaving to help advance its mission "from a different vantage point," adding he would remain in place for a few more weeks.

Lightcap's responsibilities had shifted repeatedly over the past 18 months, expanding to cover business operations and global deployment in March 2025 before he stepped back from the enterprise side in January 2026 and formally left the COO role in April, handing much of it to chief revenue officer Denise Dresser. His exit follows a string of other senior departures at OpenAI, including AGI chief Fidji Simo in July and chief marketing officer Kate Rouch in April, amid broader reorganisation as the company streamlines its focus ahead of a planned stock market listing.
