Anthropic proposes plumbing spec to link AI agents to lab kit and robots
Anthropic has outlined a proposed Model Hardware Standard (MHS) intended to let AI agents operate laboratory equipment, factory machinery and robots through a common interface. The idea is significant because equipment integration is often slow and bespoke, while connecting AI systems to physical devices could make automated experiments and industrial processes more responsive — but also introduces safety concerns.
MHS would work as a translation layer using basic operations such as reading data and writing commands, with device descriptions and tags generated during setup. Anthropic says Genentech has used it for a drug-discovery experiment with real-time error handling, while QuEra reportedly improved laser stabilisation from 58% to 99.3%; AWS and several lab-automation and robotics firms plan support. The protocol remains unpublished and in research preview, as Anthropic says language models still lack reliable physical intuition and need stronger safety testing.
