Anthropic Wants You to Pay Up for Claude Fable 5

Wired · 1 month ago

Anthropic is set to become the first frontier AI lab to place a consumer model behind usage-based billing, ending the simple "free or flat subscription" bargain for its most capable system. From 11:59PM PT on 12 July, subscribers to Anthropic's $20, $100 and $200-a-month plans will have to pay extra to use Claude Fable 5, the consumer version of its Mythos 5 model. The move matters because it signals a possible industry-wide shift away from all-you-can-use subscriptions towards charging people for exactly how much AI they consume.

The additional fees mirror the company's developer API rates: $10 per million tokens sent to the model and $50 per million tokens generated, meaning heavy use could add tens or even hundreds of dollars to a monthly bill. Anthropic attributes the change largely to data-centre capacity constraints and says it hopes to return Fable 5 to standard subscription plans "when sufficient capacity allows". The shift also reflects a broader trend, with coding tools like Cursor and some enterprise deals already moving to usage-based pricing, possibly as Anthropic tidies its finances ahead of a planned public offering. Claude reached 245 million unique visitors in May but still trails ChatGPT and Gemini, and the pricing change is seen as a test of whether consumers will pay a premium for what some regard as the best model.

  • Anthropic will charge extra usage fees for Claude Fable 5 from 12 July.
  • Rates match its API: $10 per million tokens in, $50 out.
  • Capacity limits are blamed; return to flat pricing is uncertain.
