Apple's Mac Mini has undergone a remarkable transformation, shifting from an overlooked entry-level machine to a must-have device for running artificial intelligence models following the emergence of agentic AI frameworks at the start of 2026. The compact computer became so sought-after that it sold out for most of the year, even catching Apple off guard. Now, re-equipped with the new M6 chip, the Mac Mini is reasserting its importance in an increasingly AI-focused market.

The M6 chip represents Apple's first silicon built on a 2-nanometre process node, featuring 46 billion transistors—a 35 per cent increase in transistor density. The Mac Mini now includes 12 CPU cores (two more than the M4 model), delivering 21 per cent faster single-threaded performance and a 36 per cent improvement in multi-threaded performance. The design remains compact at just 5×5 inches with integrated power supply and support for multiple external displays, though familiar quirks persist, including a hidden power button and the absence of an SD card slot. Performance gains are less substantial when compared directly to the M5 chips found in MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models.

  • Mac Mini returns with M6 chip after months of AI-driven shortages
  • 2-nm process delivers 35% transistor density increase and strong gains
  • Compact design unchanged; power button location remains frustratingly hidden
