US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has said Apple could soon follow Google in renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America" on its maps, after President Donald Trump signed an executive order last week directing the change. The move forms part of a broader trade dispute with Canada, during which Trump has threatened higher tariffs, and echoes his earlier order renaming the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" — a change adopted on some online maps but largely ignored by news outlets. Burgum said the president had personally lobbied Apple to make the switch.

The US Geological Survey's official names database has already adopted "Lake America" following the executive order, and Google confirmed at the weekend that US users of Google Maps now see the new name, while Canadian users still see "Lake Ontario"; users elsewhere are shown both. The change has drawn mockery, including from NFL broadcaster Al Michaels during a preseason game near Buffalo. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the rebranding, noting the name Lake Ontario predates both nations by over 400 years and insisting Canadians will continue using it.
