Apple refreshes the iMac with M6 chips

The Verge ·

Apple has refreshed the iMac with its M6 chip, bringing a performance upgrade two years after the previous M4 generation. The move skips an M5 iMac and adds stronger on-device AI capabilities, while leaving the computer’s design largely unchanged.

The M6 iMac starts at $1,499 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU; a 12-core configuration starts at $1,699. Apple says the M6 model offers up to five times the on-device AI performance of the M4 iMac. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 are now included on the base model, but port counts remain two on the 10-core version and four on the 12-core one. Pre-orders begin at 1:10pm ET on 28 October, with availability from 6 November.

In short

  • Apple has skipped an M5 iMac and moved straight to M6.
  • Prices start at $1,499, matching the previous entry price.
  • The main changes are the chip, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
