Beats brand readies budget iPhone controllers under Apple ownership
Developing story first seen 38 minutes ago
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman now reports that Apple is developing two game controllers for the iPhone, correcting earlier reports that the underlying code references were found in iOS — they were actually located in macOS 26.7. Gurman confirms the devices are nonetheless intended for iPhones and, notably, reveals that Beats executives are leading the project, reinforcing the likelihood that the controllers will launch under the Beats brand rather than Apple's own name.
Using Beats allows Apple to target a lower price point and experiment outside its usual premium design standards, much as it already does with Beats-branded iPhone cases and USB-C cables. Gurman suggests the gaming controller "culture and lifestyle" fits naturally with the Beats identity, and that affordability will require avoiding the costlier materials typically used in Apple's own products. The move follows MacRumors' discovery last week of two first-party controller references in macOS code, which first sparked speculation about Apple's entry into this market.
- Apple is building two iPhone game controllers, likely under Beats branding
- Code references were found in macOS, not iOS as first thought
- Beats executives, not Apple's core team, are leading development
