Ariana Grande's new album "petal" has debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming her seventh chart-topping album and confirming her place among the most successful women in the chart's history. The record earned 295,000 equivalent album units in the US in its first week, the singer-songwriter's biggest week by units in the 2020s and her strongest pure sales week in over a decade.
The seventh number one ties Grande for the fifth-most among solo women on the chart dating back to 1956, behind Taylor Swift (15), Barbra Streisand (11), Madonna (10) and Beyoncé (eight), and level with Janet Jackson and Lady Gaga. Of the total units, 168,000 came from album sales, her second-largest sales week ever, while 126,000 came from streaming equivalents and vinyl sales reached 96,000, her best-ever week on the format. "Petal" also gives Grande her tenth top-ten album, follows her Hot 100 number one single "Hate That I Made You Love Me", and arrives as she continues her Eternal Sunshine Tour, running through 1 September.
