Ariana Grande hits out at Team Trump for using ‘We Can’t Be Friends’ in TikTok

NME · 3 hours ago

Ariana Grande has publicly criticised the Team Trump TikTok account after it used her song 'We Can't Be Friends (Wait For Your Love)' in a video featuring Donald Trump. The clip, captioned with claims about transgender athletes in women's sports, prompted Grande to comment "Never use my music again. Also, your truth is false." The incident matters as part of a wider pattern of artists objecting to the Trump administration and affiliated accounts using their music without permission, often to accompany politically charged content.

This is not the first time Grande has clashed with the White House over unauthorised use of her music; in June she condemned the use of her song 'Bye' in a video depicting ICE detentions, calling the footage "barbaric, inhumane". She has been an outspoken critic of Trump since 2020, having backed Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Grande joins a growing list of artists who have objected to similar use of their work, including Taylor Swift, Kesha, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, The Rolling Stones, Adele and Neil Young. The row comes as Grande performs a 10-date residency at London's O2 Arena, ahead of reportedly stepping back from public life following the tour.
