Explained simply
The Feast of San Gennaro is an Italian religious and cultural celebration that began as a small procession in Manhattan's Little Italy neighbourhood, honouring the patron saint of Naples. Over the past century, it has grown into one of the most prominent Italian festivals in the United States, drawing large crowds to the streets of Lower Manhattan each September.
A new feature documentary is charting how this modest immigrant tradition became such a significant event. The film, currently in production, will use archival materials, interviews and coverage of the celebration to explore the feast's cultural and spiritual importance to successive generations of Italian-Americans.
Directed by Paul Borghese and produced in partnership with the feast's organisers, the documentary has been filmed in Italy and will continue shooting in New York during the centenary celebration in September. Actor Armand Assante has joined the project as narrator.
