Art of Rally follow-up Over the Hill’s biggest success is finding a way to be a driving game that asks you to take it slow

Eurogamer ·

Over the Hill, the follow-up to Art of Rally, drops racing to focus entirely on slow off-road exploration. Its appeal lies in turning careful driving and aimless wandering into a calming adventure, though players seeking clear objectives or high-speed thrills may find its pace too slow.

Players drive across stylised wilderness, including Canadian woodland and the Algerian desert, negotiating rocks, hills and mud with different gears and a winch. Maps contain question marks that can lead to cosmetic items, guided trail routes, abandoned vehicles or scenic views; camps offer fast travel and let players change the time of day.

  • Over the Hill replaces racing with unhurried off-road exploration.
  • Challenging terrain rewards patience, careful driving and winching.
  • Optional discoveries encourage players to follow their own route.
