Trump has stated that the US will reject any "globalist scheme" to regulate AI and characterised AI dangers as a "hoax", whilst simultaneously pledging to monitor the technology closely through the Department of Justice. This announcement comes amid an international effort, including a call signed by over 20 countries led by Finland, proposing transparent safety protocols, coordinated standards, and potential creation of an international institution to oversee frontier AI development. Trump's preference for renaming reflects his broader pattern of rebranding geographic features, having previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
