Artists Behind Olivia Rodrigo ‘Expectations’ Music Video Debunk AI Accusations

Rolling Stone ·

Olivia Rodrigo’s team has shared behind-the-scenes material to counter viewers’ claims that AI was used in the “Expectations” remix video with Chappell Roan. The footage shows hand-drawn work and 2D and 3D animation, offering evidence of the creative process behind a sequence that some viewers said looked AI-generated.

The accusations focused on a scene around the three-minute mark, where retro logos and images of Rodrigo and Roan appear, including figures with inconsistent-looking fingers. The team created the animations with 2D and 3D software, then filmed them on a Windows Vista screen using a high-resolution camera to create a lo-fi effect. The video also parodies game shows including The Price Is Right, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, and features David Byrne, Aquaria and the Venus Twins. Rodrigo recently said she would never use AI in her music.
