As Gen Z reconsiders dating apps, Tinder’s IRL events expand to dozens more cities

TechCrunch · 2 hours ago

Tinder is expanding its in-person "Events" feature, launched in Los Angeles in March, to dozens more cities as Gen Z users increasingly favour real-world encounters over swiping. Parent company Match Group revealed the plans during its second-quarter earnings call, framing it as part of a broader effort to reverse years of declining user numbers by giving singles lower-pressure, offline ways to meet.

The Events tab, which curates local activities such as speakeasies, bowling alleys, raves and pottery classes, has featured over 60 events since launch, with 71% of Tinder's 18-24-year-old users in Los Angeles engaging with it. It has since rolled out to nine further US and European cities and is set to reach 26 cities by the end of September and 75 by the end of 2026, delivered cheaply through partnerships with event providers rather than Tinder running them directly. The push comes as Match reported a revenue decline that sent its shares down over 10% in after-hours trading, and as Tinder's monthly active users fell 7% in the quarter, though CEO Spencer Rascoff pointed to internal data suggesting nearly half of 18-29-year-old singles want more in-person connection.
