As Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Looms, Falcom Boss Explains One of the Craziest Cliffhangers in Gaming

Push Square · 3 hours ago

Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo has revealed that the famously abrupt cliffhanger ending of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, in which protagonist Joshua abandons Estelle after a shocking revelation about his past, came about largely by accident rather than deliberate design. The disclosure, made ahead of the release of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter, sheds light on how one of gaming's most talked-about plot twists was born out of production pressures rather than a carefully planned narrative structure, offering fans fresh insight as they anticipate the next chapter.

In a new interview with publisher GungHo, Kondo explained that the original game was the first his team had built from scratch, leaving him with no real sense of appropriate game length. Around two years into development, Falcom founder Kato told the team, then only halfway through the intended story, to release what they had rather than spend further time finishing it, forcing the studio to find a natural break point. Kondo said he became anxious knowing that if the first half didn't sell, the second might never be released, so the team crafted an ending deliberately designed to leave players desperate for more. Trails in the Sky first launched in 2004, and the series it spawned is still ongoing 22 years later.

  • Falcom's iconic Trails in the Sky cliffhanger was born from production necessity, not design.
  • Founder Kato told the team to release half the story early rather than delay further.
  • CEO Kondo says anxiety over sales shaped the deliberately gripping ending.
