The Asahi Linux project has announced official support for Apple's M3-series chips, marking a significant milestone in the volunteer-driven effort to run Linux natively on Apple Silicon Macs. The team says most hardware "just works" out of the box, mirroring the maturity already achieved for M1 and M2 machines, though key gaps remain around graphics acceleration, sleep mode and external display support that will limit the experience for now.

Working features include the webcam, internal microphones, USB, hardware-accelerated video decoding (including AV1), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. However, 3D GPU acceleration is not yet performant or power-efficient, HDMI output on affected MacBooks is disabled due to missing display controller support, and sleep does not function until that same component is finished. Support currently covers the M3 and M3 Pro/Max, but not the M3 Ultra found in the Mac Studio, and installation still requires an "Expert mode" flag, which the team hopes to remove by the time Fedora Linux 45 reaches beta in a few weeks.
