Assassin’s Creed 2 was supposed to cover Brotherhood’s entire plot, but that was “way too ambitious to deliver properly” in just one game

A member of the Assassin's Creed development team has revealed that Assassin's Creed 2 was originally intended to include the story content that eventually became its own sequel, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood. According to the report, the studio realised partway through development that trying to cram both games' worth of narrative into a single title was "way too ambitious to deliver properly," prompting the plot to be split across two releases instead.

The revelation offers a rare look behind the scenes of one of the series' most acclaimed instalments, showing how Ubisoft's plans for Ezio Auditore's story evolved during production. Rather than force an overstuffed single game, the developers opted to spin off part of the narrative into Brotherhood, released in 2010, allowing both games room to develop their respective plots more fully.

  • AC2 was meant to include Brotherhood's whole story originally.
  • Developers found this too ambitious for one game.
  • The plot was split, leading to Brotherhood as a separate title.
