Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake Studio Faced with Layoffs Despite Successful Launch
Publisher Ubisoft is cutting jobs at its Ubisoft Barcelona studio, many of whose staff worked on the newly released remake Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced. Although the redundancies were planned and announced some time ago, the story has resurfaced now that the well-received remake has launched, highlighting the contrast between a successful project and the loss of the people who worked on it.
A total of 51 staff members are affected. The studio has been on strike since 30th June in opposition to the layoffs and to demand better working conditions, including previously agreed promotions and a hybrid work-from-home model, with industrial action set to continue until 16th July. One affected employee told Insider Gaming that the cuts reflect a broader pattern of "constant mistreatment", loss of talent and an increasingly top-down management culture. The layoffs form part of Ubisoft's wider restructuring, which has already brought further redundancies, studio closures and project cancellations as the publisher attempts to turn its fortunes around.
