At least 13 people have been killed and 39 injured after a Ukrainian drone strike hit the Russian republic of Tatarstan, more than 1,100km from the Ukrainian border, in one of the deadliest single attacks on Russia since the start of the full-scale war. The strike targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk, home to major oil refineries and a large petrochemical plant, and comes as Kyiv has increasingly stepped up long-range strikes on Russian facilities it says fund and support Moscow's war effort.

The overnight attack lasted several hours, with unverified social media footage showing large plumes of smoke and flames and air raid sirens sounding into the daytime. Russian officials said both industrial sites and residential areas were hit, with one child among the dead, and a period of mourning has been declared in Tatarstan; Moscow said it shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight in total. Kyiv has not yet commented on the strike. Russia continues its own large-scale attacks on Ukraine, including a strike on Kyiv last week that killed 21 people and an artillery attack in Kharkiv that killed five.
