Russian air strike kills at least 24 at Ukrainian aid shelter
A Russian air strike hit a school compound being used as a humanitarian aid centre and shelter in Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. At least 24 people are believed to have been killed, including two rescue workers, while around 20 remain missing; the toll may rise. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the attack showed Russia was not seeking de-escalation.
Officials said ten guided bombs struck the area as a limited ceasefire in the separate Kherson region expired. Emergency crews searched the rubble, while Russian drone attacks elsewhere in Ukraine injured at least 17 people. Separately, hacked government emergency-alert apps in Ukraine and Russia sent false warnings; Ukraine’s app was restored, while Russian authorities were still working to restore theirs.
In short
- At least 24 people are believed dead after a strike in Komyshuvakha.
- Around 20 people are missing, and the death toll could rise.
- Hacked alert apps sent false emergency warnings in Ukraine and Russia.
Explained simply
Zaporizhzhia is a region in south-eastern Ukraine, where Russian and Ukrainian forces have fought since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022. Komyshuvakha is among the communities affected by the fighting and attacks from the air.
Humanitarian aid centres provide people with essentials such as food and medical help, and may also offer shelter. Schools and other public buildings have been used for these purposes during the war, as civilians have faced displacement and disruption.
Ukraine’s government, led by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is defending the country against Russian forces. Attacks on places used by civilians raise questions about their safety and the delivery of aid; both sides have also accused the other of actions that endanger civilians.
