South Yorkshire Police said Jacqueline Massie, 53, was charged with attempted murder after an 81-year-old man was found seriously injured at a property on St John’s Road in Edlington, Doncaster, on 18 August. She was also charged with theft in a dwelling and possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, and was remanded in custody after appearing at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court. In a separate Edlington incident later that day, police said a man suffered life-changing injuries during a reported robbery at a Costcutter shop; Aiden Rattigan, 33, was charged with offences including section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent and robbery. Police said the two cases were not being treated as linked.
In Pennsylvania, a Cessna 150 struck a hovering Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407GX helicopter near Carlisle Airport on 19 August. The aircraft’s sole occupant, 57-year-old Paul William Sokoloski, died at the scene; the two state troopers in the helicopter were injured, with one later discharged and the other reported stable. The cause remained under investigation by the NTSB and FAA. Separately, Bumble ended its long-standing requirement for women to make the first move in heterosexual matches, allowing either person to send the opening message and extending the response period from 24 to 72 hours. The company said testing had increased conversation starts and reduced expired chats.
