Audio-Technica has launched the ATH-AL5NC, a wireless open-back headphone priced at $279, extending its open-back range beyond the wired models it previously offered. Open-back designs let air pass through the ear cups, which the company says reduces heat build-up and produces a more natural sound than closed-back headphones, though this comes at the cost of noise isolation and increased sound leakage. The headphones are aimed at listeners who prioritise audio quality and comfort over blocking out ambient noise, such as audiophiles or people working from home.

The ATH-AL5NC uses 53mm drivers and supports high-resolution 24-bit/96kHz audio via the LDAC codec, alongside AAC and SBC, and allows multipoint pairing with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. Audio-Technica claims up to 75 hours of battery life, with a 15-minute charge providing an extra eight hours of playback, and the companion CONNECT app offers adjustable presets, EQ and modes for gaming, noise reduction and reduced sound leakage. The headphones are on sale now for $279, complete with a 1.2-metre cable and carrying pouch, positioning them at a premium above rivals such as the $150 HyperX Cloud Alpha Air.
